The Charterhouse

A medieval monastery rising from the devastation of the Black Death, a grand Tudor mansion owned by aristocrats where royalty once held court, and today a pioneering 400-year-old charity — The Charterhouse is a place shaped by centuries of faith, resilience and hospitality.

Steeped in history, The Charterhouse offers a stunning historic backdrop while delivering a modern, unique and truly memorable event experience. From weddings and corporate events to photoshoots, filming and support locations, our versatile spaces can accommodate a wide range of occasions tailored to your needs.

The Great Hall remains the vibrant heart of the Charterhouse community, where residents have gathered for daily meals since 1614. This impressive space provides a remarkable setting for receptions, dinners and large gatherings.

Constructed in the 1540s, The Great Chamber is the Charterhouse’s magnificent reception room. Rich in Tudor history, it is where both Elizabeth I and James I held court prior to their coronations.

Tracing its origins back to the Carthusian monastery founded in 1371, The Norfolk Cloister is a rare survival of London’s medieval and Tudor past. This beautiful ‘garden gallery’ later became a place where schoolboys once played cloister football.

From small and intimate gatherings to entertaining on a grand scale, our indoor and outdoor spaces are highly adaptable and each provides a striking backdrop for any event. Whether you are seeking a location that captures a specific historical period or an atmospheric setting for a shoot or special occasion, The Charterhouse offers an exceptional range of architecture, natural light and authentic period detail.

As a non-profit charity, income generated from events directly supports the Charterhouse’s almshouse, which provides a home for residents in social or financial need. Founded by Thomas Sutton in 1611, this historic charity continues its mission of care and community to this day.
