Countryside Character with City Convenience: Our Visit to Horwood House

Monday 2 November 2026

Horwood House VSL at Horwood House

There's a certain magic to a venue that feels a world away from London while sitting barely an hour from Euston. Horwood House is exactly that kind of place. Last week, the VSL team made the short journey to spend the day exploring the 4* property & it’s beautiful grounds.

From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the flexibility of the estate. The hotel itself is a fascinating blend of an old manor house and a modern, sleek hotel, offering 159 bedrooms in total. But the real draw for our corporate clients is the sheer variety of event spaces and the incredible outdoor access.

Here is our breakdown of what Horwood House offers for meetings, conferences, and perhaps most importantly, company away days.

Horwood House offers 15 flexible meeting areas across the estate, with capacity ranging from intimate boardrooms to a 270-delegate theatre-style conference . The real appeal lies in the contrast between the Grade II listed Manor House and the contemporary hotel wing. You can hold a strategy session in a room with original features, then break out into a sleek, tech-equipped syndicate space without leaving the grounds.

The Manor Library is the standout heritage space. With its dual-aspect windows overlooking the drive, ornate wallpaper, and original stone fireplace, it suits boardroom-style meetings or private dining for up to 12 guests . For client-facing sessions where atmosphere matters, this is the room that leaves an impression. Afternoon tea or a private dinner here feels like a genuine occasion rather than a hotel function.

The Cook Suite handles the larger end of the spectrum. It can take up to 250 guests theatre-style, 200 for a banquet, or 180 for a dinner dance. This is the space for awards dinners, full-company conferences, or evening receptions where you need scale without sacrificing the country-house setting. The suite works equally well for a plenary session in the morning and a gala dinner in the evening, saving the logistical headache of moving delegates between venues.

The Eyre Suite sits comfortably in the middle ground, accommodating up to 120 theatre-style or 80 for a cabaret setup. It's a versatile choice for mid-sized conferences, training days, or breakout sessions from a larger main-room event.

The 1911 Restaurant is a popular choice for conference lunches, offering a sleek dining experience without compromising a professional atmosphere.

Smaller syndicate rooms include Cabot, Columbus, Drake, and Frobisher. These round out the offering for workshops and parallel sessions. These are the workhorse spaces for multi-track conferences, giving organisers the ability to run simultaneous sessions without delegates feeling crammed into makeshift corners.

The Outdoor Advantage

What elevates Horwood House above a standard conference hotel is how directly the grounds connect to the meeting spaces. Many rooms open straight out onto the lawns and gardens, meaning a coffee break can become a genuine breath of fresh air rather than a shuffle to a corridor.

With 38 acres of gardens and woodland, the outdoor access is a real asset for company away days. Teams can step outside for walking meetings, outdoor yoga, or simply a mental reset between sessions. The estate also supports the hotel's experiential activities. Honey tasting with the on-site beekeepers, cocktail masterclasses using estate-grown lavender, and butterfly house painting, all of which can be woven into the day's agenda. The hotel also has an all-year tennis court & football pitch for guests to use as they wish. For organisers planning an away day where the venue itself does some of the engagement work, this combination of flexible indoor spaces and accessible outdoor areas is a strong proposition.

The event team we met was clearly used to adapting the spaces to different formats, and the £6 million refurbishment means the AV infrastructure is up to date throughout. For a venue that balances character with practical capacity, Horwood House covers more ground than most.
