The City of London Club is the oldest in the city of London. From its very inauguration it has had a recognised status of character and dignity, which it maintains to this day. The Club has recently opened itself up to the opportunity of external private hire and VSL took a look around...

The City of London Club was founded in 1832 by a group of prominent bankers, merchants and ship owners, who formed a committee, on 29th February of that year, under the chairmanship of Mr John Masterman, then Member of Parliament for the City.

Located on Old Broad Street, the Club offers superb access to the City's hub stations, just 2 minutes from Bank, 8 minutes from Cannon Street and 6 minutes from Liverpool Street stations.

The Main Dining Room is the centre of this beautiful Club and the magnificent space has echoed with the rumbling laughter of generations of satisfied diners for years - but now it's open to non-members! The Club’s kitchen focuses on the best of British produce from specially selected farming estates, tailoring menus to showcase the high quality, seasonal ingredients. This traditional and elegant banqueting venue space accommodates 140 guests for dinner or drinks receptions for up to 300 guests.

The historic Drawing Room is presided over by a portrait of one of the Club’s famous members, the Duke of Wellington, and contributes to the room’s stately gravitas. However, appearances can be deceptive! The Drawing Room has a well-deserved reputation as a brilliant venue for a lively cocktail party. The Duke himself, while not much of a gourmet, was known for his love of a fine wine, so we think he would approve! Perfect, for your next Christmas party, The Drawing Room can accommodate up to 150 guests for drinks reception, up to 40 guests boardroom style and up to 60 guests theatre style.

The Members Bar is a grand, panelled, club-style room and has seen many intriguing plots hatched around its open fire. With prominent political members such as Sir Robert Peel as frequent visitors, the phrase ‘if only walls could talk’ could have been coined for this room. The Members’ Bar is a cosy and intimate venue for pre-dinner drinks for up to 60 guests or up 30 guests for private dining.

The Salisbury room was named after one of the Club’s original members, the second Marquis of Salisbury. He had eleven children from two wives so it’s hardly surprising he relished a room of his own. His son, Lord Salisbury was three times Prime Minister and originated the policy of “splendid isolation” with regard to Europe. In 2017 The Salisbury room was re-furbished and became a brasserie, open all day serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for Members and guests. However the Salisbury room can be exclusively hired for private dining. These days when you book the Salisbury room for its unique, intimate atmosphere, we imagine you are not seeking solitude. This room can accommodate up to 40 for a private dinner, or be used for a lively dance space and after party following dinner in the larger spaces.

The Club is working on an exciting project to open their beautiful and protected terrace space for Summer parties and receptions year round, with a marquee structure allowing access to the tranquil gardens with weather proof protection from the elements.

The Club also boasts 20 recently added, and bespoke bedrooms on site, with categories ranging from Suites through to Club rooms.
